Helping patients find a community
Overview
Febo Health is an app for people with chronic conditions. We focused on helping patients to find their community. Instead of yet another forum, we created an interpersonal experience to find advice and support.
As the only UX Designer on the team, I worked closely with our Lead Scientist to improve people's experiences based on psychology principles. We worked together to conduct interviews, aligned on a prototype and check the design solution.
Solution
I designed a social matching platform. This feature allowed users to find others with similar chronic conditions and learn about them. Moreover, it allowed them chat with each other and share insights about their condition.
Outcomes
Created a connection between chronic condition patients
Overall acceptance of feature by the steering commitee, comformed of chronic condition patients
Introduced a new feature while providing flexibility for users to engage with it

User Interviews
The team Lead Scientist and I conducted interviews with several chronic condition patients. At first, we wanted to know their thoughts on this feature. However, we found some opportunities to improve the experience.
"An immersive experience without being overwhelming"
- Participant 1
"Deal with the user's privacy in an empathic manner"
- Participant 2
Competitive Analysis
I conducted a competitive analysis of other common community channels, such as Facebook, Reddit, and Discord. I also explored more intimate connections, such as WhatsApp messaging and dating apps. We set ourselves apart by creating a community that promoted a safe space by taking elements from both.
Understanding the problem
We created Febo Health as a way for people with long-term health problems to get the support they need. We didn't want to compete with well-known social media or dating apps.
How might we empower chronic condition patients to find others like them?

Test
We presented the new feature to our participants. Most agreed that the social aspect helped them connect with other patients. However, some expressed concerns about privacy issues and sharing options.

User Feedback
"My only concern is, how do I make sure I keep things private with the other end"
- Participant 3
"I would like to be certain there are more ways to protect my data"
- Participant 4
Iterate
From user feedback, we understood how important privacy is. Instead of shareable profiles, we created a code process. Users can share a code with a lifespan of 24 hours to prevent spam and trolling.
